Duties of Ratings - Pay Grades E-4
through E-9
Groups I, II and III A rating is an occupation in the Navy which calls for the same sort of skills and ability. The rating combines with a pay grade to form a rate. The following tables indicate the duties of Petty Officers: |
| Group I - DECK |

Boatswain's Mate (BM) |
Perform various deck
duties aboard ship, maintain rigging, ground tackle, canvas articles;
supervise operation and maintenance of ship's boats; operate and
maintain eqcargo handlinguipment at CB activities; supervise
working and damage control parties; act as members of gun crew. |

Quartermaster (QM) |
Perform
ship-control, navigation, and bridgewatch duties; correct charts and
maintain navigation aids; maintain visual communications; stand
lookout watch; act as helmsman and lookout supervisors; supervise
buglers. |
| Signalman (SM) |
Send, receive, and prepare
messages by flashing light, semaphore and flag hoist |
|
| Radarman
(RD) |
Operate and
perform upkeep on search radar, electronic recognition and
identification, and radar countermeasure equipment; stand watch in
ClC. |
|
| Sonarman (SO) |
Operate sonar detection
equipment, underwater fire-control equipment, and harbor defense
detection equipment; perform operational and preventive
maintenance of sonar
and harbor defense detection equipment. |

| Group ll - ORDNANCE |

|
Gunner's Mate (GM) |
Operate and perform
upkeep and repair of mounts, turrets, rockets, missile launchers, and
small arms; handle ammunition and explosives. |
|
Torpedoman's Mate (TM) |
Perform
upkeep and repair of torpedoes and ASW ordnance other than mines and
antisubmarine rockets. |
|
| Mineman (MN) |
Perform upkeep and repair of
mines and associated equipment. |
|
| Fire
Control Technician (FT) |
Operate and
perform upkeep, major repair, and overhaul of fire-control systems and
their components, including fire-control radar. |
|
|
Guided Missileman (GS) |
Perform internal technical and
operational maintenance on surface-launched missiles; test, align,
replace, and repair internal components, and maintain associated test
equipment. |
|
Nuclear
Weaponsman (NW) |
Maintain,
adjust, repair, inspect, test, and package nuclear weapons, components,
and associated equipment. |
| Group lll - ELECTRONICS |

|
Electronics Technician
(ET) |
Maintain, repair,
and overhaul equipment (except aircraft and ordnance electronic
equipment). |
