Duties of Ratings - Pay Grades E-4 through
E-9
Groups IV, V and VI A rating is an occupation in the Navy which calls for the same sort of skills and ability. The rating combines with a pay grade to form a rate. The following tables indicate the duties of Petty Officers: |
| Group IV - PRECISION
EQUIPMENT |

Instrumentman (IM) |
Adjust,
repair, and recondition mechanical instruments, office machines, gages,
and watches; set jewels in instruments, watches, and clocks; repair
mechanical parts of electrical instruments. |
| Opticalman
(OM) |
Overhaul,
repair, and adjust optical equipment. |

| Group V - ADMINISTRATIVE
AND CLERICAL |

| Radioman (RM) |
Operate
and perform upkeep of all types of radio transmitting and receiving
equipment and teletypewriter equipment. |
|
| Communications
Technician (CT) |
Perform
special communication duties; also duties in connection with communications
research and engineering. |
|
| Yeoman (YN) |
Perform clerical and secretarial
duties, including stenography, filing and typing; keep records, prepare
reports, and handle correspondence and mail; act as office managers. |
|
|
Personnel
Man (PN) |
Test,
classify, counsel, and recommend assignment of enlisted personnel; analyze,
evaluate, and classify naval billets; maintain officer and enlisted
service records, and prepare required personnel data reports; act as assistants
to executive, personnel, classification, training, welfare, and recruiting
officers. |
| Machine Accountant (MA) |
Operate key punching and
key verifying punched-card accounting machines; design procedures for,
and maintain adequate control over, machine and related manual operations. |

Storekeeper
(SK) |
Perform
clerical and manual duties in supply department relating to procurement,
stowage, supplies of all kinds (exclusive of aircraft and aeronautical
equipment). |

Disbursing Clerk (DK) |
Perform clerical duties
relative to military pay records, payroll certification sheets, allotments,
and return in disbursing branch of supply department. |
| Commissaryman (CS) |
Serve
as cooks, butchers, and bakers for general mess ashore and afloat; prepare
menus; order, inspect, stow, and account for provisions; care for galley
and food storage spaces. |

Ship's Serviceman (SH) |
Manage ship's store activities
afloat and ashore, Navy exchange activities ashore, and MSTS exchange
activities afloat; specialize as barbers, beauty operators, cobblers,
laundrymen, tailors, or store clerks in pay grades E-4 and E-5. |

Journalist
(JO) |
Perform
news reporting, copy reading editing, and related functions for dissemination
of stories and naval subjects through such media as newspapers, periodicals,
and radio. |
| Group VI - MISCELLANEOUS |

| Lithographer (LI) |
Operate printing
equipment; perform copy preparation, composition, presswork, and binding;
maintain printing equipment. |

Draftsman
(DM) |
Prepare various technical
drawings, plans, sketches, tracings, illustrations, maps, and charts;
prepare specifications, material estimates, and bills of material. |
|
Musician (MU) |
Serve as members of bands or orchestras
which provide music at ceremonies, parades, recreational functions,
and concerts; play one or more musical instruments; arrange and transcribe
music; act as assistant conductors and conductors in pay grades E-6 and
E-7, respectively. |
