Duties of Ratings - Pay Grades E-4 through
E-9
Groups VII and VIII A rating is an occupation in the Navy which calls for the same sort of skills and ability. The rating combines with a pay grade to form a rate. The following tables indicate the duties of Petty Officers: |
| Group VII - ENGINEERING
AND HULL |

Machinist's
Mate (MM) |
Install
operate, maintain, and repair ship's steam propulsion and auxiliary
equipment, outside machinery, and refrigeration and air conditioning equipment. |

Engineman
(EN) |
Operate, maintain,
and repair internal combustion engines and auxiliaries. |
|
Machinery Repairman (MR) |
Perform duties of shop machinists,
using precision machine and hand tools. |
|
Boilerman (BT) |
Operate and repair
all types of marine boilers and fire-room machinery. (1)
BT's take care of all drinking water, boiler
water, fuel oil, helo fuel, and made sure the ship is on an even
keel by pumping oil from one side to the other. BT lab techs were referred
to as "Water Kings". |

Boilermaker (BR) |
Inspect and repair marine boilers
and heat exchanges. |
|
Electrician's
Mate (EM) |
Maintain and repair
power and lighting circuits, distribution switchboards, generators. and
motors. |
|
I.C. Electrician (IC) |
Maintain and repair shipboard interior
communications systems. |
|
Shipfitter
(SF) |
Use hand and machine
tools for steel metal work. Bend, repair and fit pipes |
|
Damage Controlman (DC) |
Serve as technical assistants, instructors,
and inspectors for fire prevention, fire fighting, damage control,
and atomic, biological, and chemical warfare; perform carpentry duties. |

Patternmaker
(PM) |
Make wooden, plaster,
or metal patterns, core boxes, and flasks used by molders in a Navy
foundry. |
|
Molder (ML) |
Operate foundries aboard ship and
at shore stations; make molds and cores, rig flasks, prepare heats,
and pour castings of metals; shot blast or sandblast castings, and pour
bearings. |
| Group VIII - CONSTRUCTION |

Surveyor (SV) |
Make
reconnaissance and preliminary and final location surveys for roads,
airfields, pipelines, ditches, buildings, drainage structures, and
waterfront construction. |

Construction
Electrician's Mate (CE) |
Install
operate, maintain, and repair electrical generating equipment, distribution
systems, interior wiring, lighting fixtures and telephone, public address,
and interoffice communication systems. |
|
Equipment Operator (EO) |
Operate, field-check,
and service automotive and heavy construction equipment. |
|
Mechanic
(CM) |
Maintain,
lubricate, repair, and overhaul automotive and heavy construction equipment
and diesel and gasoline internal combustion engines. |
|
Builder (BU) |
Construct, erect, maintain,
and repair wooden and concrete structures. |
|
Steelworker
(SW) |
Rig
and erect A-frames, gin poles, derricks, booms, and blocks and tackle;
operate) winches and hoists in moving and hoisting operations; erect
or dismantle bridges, buildings, tanks, towers, and pontoons. |

Utilities Man (UT) |
Install operate, maintain,
and repair pumps, stationary steam boilers, and water supply and sewage
disposal equipment. |
