Lyon, Eugene F.

Eugene F. Lyon of Newport, VT died on October 7, 2011, at the Bel-Aire Center in Newport.

Mr. Lyon was born in Newport, the only son of Paul and Simone (Turgeon) Lyon. Except for his military service, he spent most of his life in Newport, which he considered God's special place.

Mr. Lyon loved sports and played baseball, football, and basketball for Newport High School; in adulthood, he coached Little League.

He joined the Navy in 1958 and was a proud Plank Owner (original member of the first crew of the newest ship commissioned) of the USS Little Rock, a guided missile cruiser that was commissioned on June 3, 1960. He was a gung-ho missileman and spent time in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Port Au Prince, Haiti, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, San Juan, Puerto Rico, Malta, Italy, France, Turkey, and Greece during his tour of duty.

After completing his military service, he returned to Newport and spent 30 years employed by Butterfield Division, UTD in Derby Line, retiring in 1996.

Mr. Lyon was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the American Legion Post #21 of Newport, which became his second home and where he spent countless happy hours playing cards and darts. He also endured lots of ribbing for being one of the few local fans of the hapless Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians. He was passionate and extremely well informed on politics and was a walking encyclopedia of sports trivia and statistics, often engaging in heated debates on those two subjects at the Legion. His friendship with other legionnaires and their wives gave him immeasurable pleasure and the caring and concern shown by many of them when he became ill was a great source of comfort.

Although single for many years prior to his death, he had been married three times and remained on very friendly terms with his first wife, the former Marion Prue, whose son, Dana, he adopted. Mr. Prue was killed in a tragic snowmobile accident in January of 1997, at the age of 16, an emotional blow from which Mr. Lyon never fully recovered.

He is survived by his sisters: Marie Lyon Mack and her husband, Steve, of Summerville, South Carolina, and Simone Lyon Vitagliano and her husband, Joe, of Ocala, Florida; by two nieces: Tiffany Scott Apperson and her husband, Edmund, of Shorewood, Minnesota, and Bettina Judd Oeschger and her husband, Jeff, of Marietta, Georgia; by a nephew, Brian Judd of Morgan; by an aunt, Frances Phillips of Chesterfield, Virginia; and by cousins: Suzette Campbell, Jeannine Glynn, Sue Taylor, Sally Austin, Cora Marandola, Howard Lyon, Jay Lyon Jr., Joyce Raposa, and Rae Parenteau.

A brief memorial service will be held at the American Legion at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 12. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Newport, which will be private.

Sheppard,  John "Shep" R.  CDR USN

It would appear that no formal obituary was published for shipmate CDR John "Shep" R. Sheppard. In lieu of an obituary we will post comments and remembrances from shipmates and friends here.  (A great place to read about Cdr. Sheppard's Navy and USS Little Rock experiences is on his Oral History page.)

•   The following notice was published in the San Diego Union-Tribune on August 12, 2011:

SHEPPARD,  JOHN R. of San Diego
         July 6, 1922 - August 8, 2011
Visitation on 8/18 from 6:30-8:00p with a Rosary at 7pm at Our Mother of Confidence.
         Mass 8/19, 10:30am at OMC.
         Clairemont Mortuary Directors 858-279-2211

Here are some thoughts about "Shep" received from friends and shipmates.

•    "..... I am greatly upset.  John was one of my most important mentors in the Wardroom when I came aboard as an Ensign.  While he portrayed a rather gruff exterior, the man  was a huge teddy bear for sure.  I loved him."
Jerry Dupuis

•    "This is a loss to us all……….he was a fine officer and a fine gentleman!"
Steve Chase

•     "We lost a great shipmate."
Woody Donaldson

•     "John Sheppard, better know as "Shep" was a CO-Founder of the Little Rock Assn. and provided valuable leadership during our early years.  ...... It's sad to hear about the loss of "Shep".   Many don't realize the role he played in forming our organization back in 1991.  He provided much guidance during the first year or two and didn't complain about the extensive travel from California. H of course is one of the four founders of the Little Rock Assn."
Don Schuld

•     "And could John tell a story.  A raconteur in the finest sense of the word."
Bill Stankiewicz
