| Note: The
following letter from Kent R. Siegel, Chairman, Scholarship Committee, and
was originally published in the Spring 2006 LitComs. March 1, 2006 Dear USS LITTLE ROCK Family Member, It is that time of year when we must focus attention on our Association's Scholarship Program and seek the financial replenishment that sustains it. To date, the program has enjoyed your staunch support in helping ten worthy award recipients, attached to NROTC units, with their college expenses. That's two $2000 scholarships per year for five years. Our goal for 2006 is to make at least two more awards requiring a minimum of $4000 in new funding. You should also be aware that a representative of your Association has traveled to the winner's unit to personally make the award at a public ceremony in all ten cases. That imposes some additional modest expenses on the fund. Allow me to recap our track record. The ten previous winners are remarkable young Americans who came from ten different universities across the country. We are very proud of and somewhat amazed by the diversity of our winners. When selected, all were entering their 3rd academic year and destined for commissioned service in the Navy or Marine Corps upon graduation. The breakout is six men and four women. The men's profile shows three NROTC engineering majors, one a former sailor, and three enlisted Marines in a college commissioning program. The female picture is three NROTC nursing majors, two former enlisted women; and one NROTC engineering major. These results were based on a two-tier selection process that looks at academic achievement and military aptitude - total equal opportunity without any preferences based on other criteria. This spring, as in past years, the announcement of our scholarship offering will be sent to all 59 NROTC units by the Naval Service Training Command in Pensacola, FL. Applications will be collected in May and given a preliminary screening by the Navy with the five or six best sent to our Scholarship Committee for final selection. It is important to stress that we will award scholarships only to those we deem deserving. However, in our experience, there have been few unworthy candidates and selecting winners has been difficult. When we meet in Boston in July, we will select one, two, or even three winners, based on our ability to fund them. Results will be announced at the reunion business meeting. We need both your moral and financial support, but it is the latter for which I now appeal. Remembering that your contribution is tax-deductible, please be as generous as you can. Checks should be made out to “USS LITTLE ROCK Assoc. Scholarship Fund” and sent to Association Treasurer Mark Lehmann in the envelope provided. |
