Duties of Ratings - Pay Grades E-4 through E-9

Groups IX and XII


A rating is an occupation in the Navy which calls for the same sort of skills and ability. The rating combines with a pay grade to form a rate. The following tables indicate the duties of Petty Officers:


Group IX - AVIATION
AD
Aviation Machinist's Mate (AD)
Maintain, service, adjust, and replace aircraft engines and accessories.
AT
Aviation Electronics Technician (AT)
Maintain, repair, and install aircraft electronic equipment.
AO
Aviation Ordnanceman (AO)
Operate, install repair, and service all aviation ordnance equipment.
AC
Air Controlman (AC)
Control aircraft traffic at airdromes, seadromes; and on board ship by means of radio, radar, flashing light signals, and flag hoists.
AB
Aviation Boatswain's Mate (AB)
Operate, maintain, and repair aircraft catapults, arresting gear, and gasoline and oil transfer systems; handle aircraft on carriers, seaplane ramps, and in anchorages; perform deck seamanship.
AE
Aviation Electrician's Mate (AE)
Perform line and shop maintenance; repair, adjust, and install aircraft electrical equipment and aircraft instruments.
AQ
Aviation Fire Control Technician (AQ)
Maintain, test, adjust, and install aviation fire-control equipment.
GF
Aviation Guided Missileman (GF)
Perform internal technical and operational maintenance on air-Iaunched missiles; test, align, replace, and repair internal components, and maintain associated test equipment.
AM
Aviation Structural Mechanic (AM)
Maintain, repair, and align aircraft surfaces and air frame structures; maintain, repair, and replace aircraft hydraulic systems; maintain ejection seats, mechanical components of aircraft cabin pressurization, and air conditioning systems.
PR
Parachute Rigger (PR)
Operate, maintain, and repair aviation survival equipment and flight clothing; instruct in operation of equipment and in aviation survival techniques.
AG
Aerographer's Mate (AG)
Collect, record, and analyze aerological data; interpret weather codes and enter data on appropriate charts; forecast weather from observations.
TD
Tradesman or Tradevman
 (TD)

TDI - Instructor (Non-Aviation)
TDR - Repairman (Non-Aviation)
TDU - Instructor (Aviation)
TDV - Repairman (Aviation)

Operate, maintain, repair, and install training devices; teach personnel through lectures, movies, and individual instruction, using devices to simulate operating conditions.

Note: Rating originally (in 1940's) was Special Artificer (SAD). The TD rating was disbanded in the mid-1980's.

AK
Aviation Storekeeper (AK)
Procure, receive, identify, check, stow, preserve, and issue aircraft and aeronautical equipment; maintain required records.
PH
Photographer's Mate (PH)
Perform all phases of photographic work required by the naval service.
PT
Photographic Intelligenceman (PT)
Maintain and process air / photo intelligence data.

Group X - MEDICAL
HM
Hospital Corpsman (HM)
Perform numerous types of medical and clerical duties in the Hospital Corps; may be technicians in specialized fields; may serve in small ships, treating all illnesses and injuries.

Group XI - DENTAL
DT
Dental Technician (DT)

Perform dental, clinical, and administrative duties for dental officers.

Group XII - STEWARD
SD  
Steward (SD)
Serve as cooks or bakers for officers' mess; supervise servicing of officers' quarters and serving of meals in wardroom.

NOTE: The Steward rating was discontinued in Dec 74 and merged with Commissary in Jan 75 to form Mess Management Specialist (MS). The MS rating covers most of the responsibilities of both the former CS and SD ratings and is also responsible for BEQ management. Routine housekeeping and cleaning services for officers is now provided to all Navy personnel in a similar manner and is not part of the responsibilities for MS personnel.
