NOTE:
As of November 2016, three of four active Freedom-class littoral combat ships have suffered engine maintenance incidents.

USS Milwaukee LCS 5 broke down in the Atlantic Ocean in December 2015 and had to be towed back to port. Metallic debris was found in the filter system. The cause was traced to a clutch between the gas turbine and diesel engine systems, which failed to disengage as designed while switching from one propulsion system to the other.

USS Fort Worth LCS 3 suffered a similar breakdown in the Pacific Ocean in January 2016. Improper procedures used aboard ship caused a set of combining gears to be operated with insufficient oil.

USS Freedom LCS 1 in July 2016, suffered a seawater leak into one of its two main diesel propulsion systems.

USS Detroit LCS 7 had to return to port in Mayport, FL in October 2020 from a deployment to South America after suffering a breakage of the combining gear system. (The system needs to be engaged for reach speeds over 12 knots.)

"The U.S. Navy says that it will not be taking delivery of any more Freedom-class littoral combat ships (LCSs) until lead contractor Lockheed Martin has fixed a major problem with the vessel's combining gear, the transmission that marries power input from the vessel's diesel engines and gas turbines."
The article continues
"Planned orders for both LCS variants have been trimmed back in favor of a new conventional frigate design (the FFG(X)), but the Navy has already contracted for 16 Freedom-class vessels. The first two in the series are slated for early decommissioning, eight are in service or repair, and the final six are in various stages of construction."

"A design fix has been developed and is in production, to be followed by factory and sea-based testing," the statement said. "The fix will be installed and tested on new construction ships prior to the Navy taking deliveries of those ships. Measures have been implemented to mitigate risk to the in-service Freedom variant ships while the Navy moves swiftly to correct the deficiency and minimize operational impacts."
In addition, Defense News reports that the temporary operating restrictions will limit the service's current LCS fleet to a top speed of 34 knots rather than the normal 40-plus knots until the retrofit process is complete.
